End Knots

The simplest is the overhand knot. However, this is prone to shift without careful setting.

One method is to unravel the 3 strands of the rope enough to place to knot at the position where the strands begin to separate, and then to crush the knot by tightening backwards and forwards on this point.

Please note that if strands are still loose upstream of the knot (towards the rope centre – see image, lower), this provides an area where load will migrate and produce imbalance.

This also applies to any other knotting or lashing.
